Shellac: A Bioactive Coating for Surface Engineering of Cardiovascular Devices

Neointimal hyperplasia and thrombosis are the main factors contributing to implantation failure of blood-contacting devices. Here, excellent potential shellac (lac), a naturally-sourced, non-toxic, biodegradable resin, as multifunctional coating address these critical issues in devices is reported. Shellac coatings with varied thicknesses 95.1–518.6 nm fabricated using spin coating. The viability proliferation endothelial cells smooth muscle cultured on relatively low thickness (95.1 nm) have no significant difference compared that 316L stainless steel (316L SS), while decrease significantly for higher than 308.5 nm. Hemolysis ratios all less 5%. results anticoagulation tests manifest show superior anticoagulant performance SS through inhibiting coagulation pathways. Through abdominal aorta rats, it shown first time can inhibit neointimal hyperplasia, most likely due inhibition vascular cell phenotypic transformation. Bio-resin, studied here, be easily administered from ethanol solutions onto almost any type solid material, ushering new dimension surface engineering cardiovascular such inferior vena cava filters stents.
